Welcome to the official platform of Japan Week 2026, the international event that this year will transform Palermo into the beating heart of Japanese culture in the Mediterranean. But what exactly is Japan Week?

It is not a simple fair or a festival for enthusiasts, but a monumental project of cultural diplomacy and international friendship. Born over half a century ago and orchestrated by the prestigious IFF (International Friendship Foundation) of Tokyo, Japan Week is a traveling global event that each year selects a single city in the world to celebrate the deep bond between Japan and the host nation. Now in its 51ª edition, this event chooses Palermo as the guardian of a millennial dialogue, celebrating the meeting of two cultures that may seem distant but are united by a profound respect for history, hospitality and art.

For an entire week, the Sicilian capital will not be just a backdrop, but a widespread stage. Over 1,000 delegates, academic masters, artists and custodians of ancestral traditions will arrive directly from Japan. Their goal? To share, in a completely authentic way and without commercial filters, the essence of the Land of the Rising Sun, creating a harmonious and magnetic contrast between Palermo’s Arab-Norman heritage and Japanese spiritual minimalism.

The Three Hearts of the Festival: The Locations

Japan Week 2026 will inhabit the city’s emblematic places, offering a logistical and cultural route designed to make Palermo beat to a new rhythm:

Teatro Politeama Garibaldi: It will be the monumental “Headquarters.” This neoclassical jewel will host the highest institutional authorities, the lavish opening and closing Galas, and the major avant-garde dance and theatre performances.

Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa: The space for sharing and action. An urban regeneration hub that will become a living Japanese village, dedicated to interactive workshops, craft exhibitions, gastronomy and dynamic demonstrations.

Teatro Santa Cecilia: The temple of music. Its impeccable acoustics will cradle the mystical vibrations of ancient instruments, offering intimate and rare concerts.

What will you experience during Japan Week?

Experiencing Japan Week means immersing yourself in a total sensory and cultural experience, where the ancient East dialogues with the heart of Palermo. During the seven days of the festival, you will be able to witness the primal power of Taiko drums and the mystical melodies of the Koto and the Shakuhachi flute in historic theatres. You will have the opportunity to slow down the daily pace by taking part in the meditative Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu), the art of calligraphy (Shodo) and the arrangement of flowers (Ikebana). There will also be room for steel discipline with martial arts masters who will embody the way of Bushido through demonstrations of Kendo, Aikido and Sumō, accompanied by outstanding artisans who will reveal the secrets of Bonsai care, Origami folding and the ritual sharpening of Katana. The journey will also involve the palate with exclusive masterclasses dedicated to Sake culture and Japanese gastronomy.

An Event Open to Everyone

Japan Week 2026 is a gift that IFF and the Comune di Palermo make to citizens and tourists: the vast majority of shows, exhibitions and performances are completely free of charge.

However, to preserve the authenticity and safety of the experience, hands-on workshops, limited-capacity labs and theatre seats will require advance reservation.

Whether you are a curious local, a fan of Eastern culture, a family or a tourist who has come to Palermo for the occasion, we invite you to explore the site, consult the day-by-day schedule and prepare to live a week that will remain in the city’s history
